Arsenal Football Club was founded in 1886 by munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, south-east London. The club joined the Football League in 1893 and reached the First Division in 1904. But a limited squad and communication problems soon took their toll. Arsenal slumped at the end of 2018-19, falling out of the Champions League places and getting thrashed by Chelsea in the Europa League final.

The poor form spilled over to 2019-20, and Emery was sacked in November with Arsenal in mid-table. This time Arteta was chosen, and he set about the difficult task of rebuilding the squad and instituting a new style against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic.

After two difficult campaigns Arsenal’s faith in Arteta started to pay off with a 5th place finish in 2021-22. The following season a young Arsenal team surprised everyone with a spirited title push that eventually fell away in the spring, but achieved 2nd place finish and Champions League qualification.
